A year on from Christopher Willits’ Gravity album, which found the artist in a reflective space, he enlists some of his favorite artists to rework the album. Gravity Remixes welcomes April + VISTA, East Forest, Eduardo Castillo, Helios, King Britt, and Superposition.
As a staple on Ghostly International for two decades, the pioneering composer, guitarist, producer, and visual artist has navigated the field of contemporary ambient music with curiosity and ambition. For 2022’s Gravity, Willits emerged from a period of change and challenge with his most personal and refined work to date. Mixed in spatial audio by Willits himself, a format he's embraced since 2017 album Horizon and as the director of the immersive listening nonprofit Envelop, the material came with the simple instruction to let the sound guide the mind's intrinsic need to process. "This music is a tool for slowing down, feeling, and healing." Gravity Remixes continues the sentiment and expands its reach via a range of artistry.
For set opener "Crescent," we find album collaborators April George of DC’s April + VISTA revisiting their original, adding a more pronounced string arrangement to celestial effect. Long-time affiliates Superposition (Justin Boreta and Matthew Davis) reimagine “Origin” in a haze of static and abstracted bell sounds. For the stunning “Tunnels” remake by East Forest, the electronic project of Portland’s Trevor Oswalt, the tune steps into nature territory before its piano glissando takes hold. Venezuela’s Eduardo Castillo elevates the pace of “Spiraling” with soft percussion and orchestral layering. The track also gets a hypnotic, arpeggiated synth re-work from legendary DJ/producer and now educator King Britt. Ghostly labelmate Helios (Keith Kenniff, aka Goldmund), fresh from his new album Espera, brings standout “Endless” into more beat-driven strata, setting the release into new terrain.
