I was in fourth or fifth grade when I first encountered the strange world of Doctor Who. The BBC had a different way of making television in those days, filming all the interiors on video and the exteriors on 16mm film. This gave their programs a distinct look that was as alien to me as the science fiction locales they were set in. Coupled with the inherently British colloquialisms (what exactly was a “jelly baby”?!), the series fascinated me with all the ways it wasn’t like Star Wars, Star Trek, or Battlestar Galactica.

Eventually I discovered there was a long history of the show that pre-dated all the Tom Baker stories I had seen, and the show continued on after his departure, thanks to the handy trick of “regeneration”. I watched as Peter Davison took over the role of the Doctor, and I joined a fan club in Albany, NY, where I grew up, attending screenings of earlier shows starring William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, and John Pertwee. I even won an LP of music from the series as a prize in an art contest.

Of course, the music for the show was one of the things that always grabbed me. Dudley Simpson’s scores for the Tom Baker stories had a unique sound, using electronic instruments alongside woodwinds and percussion to great effect. When the 1980’s came along, the acoustic instruments were phased out in favor of synthesizers, and that remained the sound of the show until the end of its first run in 1989. When Paul McGann starred as The Doctor in a TV movie in 1996, John Debney brought to the musical landscape a more orchestral and cinematic sound, which was further developed by Murray Gold when the show came back as a series on the BBC in 2005.

As a fan of the show, I always enjoyed the Big Finish stories. They kept the Doctor Who universe alive during the times it was off the air. I became friends with former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel in 2013, and through him, was able to talk with Nicholas Briggs at Big Finish about writing scores for them. Now, almost 10 years later, I am proud to have contributed music to stories starring many of my favorite characters from the Doctor Who universe, including the Doctor himself, in seven of his incarnations.

This collection includes music from stories featuring Doctors Four, Five, Six, Seven and Eight. I tried to compose scores for each adventure that reflected the music that was heard in the TV series during the particular era each story takes place. Hence the woodwinds and electronics for The God of Phantoms and The Wizard of Time (both Fourth Doctor stories), the pseudo-FM synthesis textures of The Helliax Rift and Vortex Ice (Fifth and Sixth Doctor tales, respectively), and the more orchestral setting for the Eighth Doctor’s Charlotte Pollard: The Further Adventuress (yes, that’s the title - it’s a sort of pun, you see?).

The outliers are the scores for the Sylvester McCoy adventures Red Planets and The Quantum Possibility Engine. The TV stories of his era were virtually all synth scores, but Uma McCormack, the writer of Red Planets, asked for a choral piece in the script, so I composed “Medici Qui” for choir, translating a few key phrases into Latin for the text. The use of a choir then made the use of orchestra a better fit than the typical electronics of the era on TV. When the time came to score The Q.P.E. (as we called it, to save time) it made sense to re-orchestrate it for strings as a call-back to the earlier adventure.

It has been a delight for me to work with the brilliant actors, writers, producers, and directors of Big Finish, and I look forward to many more collaborations with them in the Doctor Who universe, and beyond. Joe Kraemer Los Angeles, CA JOE KRAEMERJOE KRAEMER
