Stephen Duffy did not suffer the infamous second-album syndrome when he came up with this one. Building on the sound he created on his debut album, Duffy mixes his influences together to produce a much more brassy, Motown type of album. He continues to rely on the use of keyboards and synth-percussion contributes to fill out the music, which results in an '80s feel. But in the end the listener is left with strong melodies and charming, sometimes heartbreaking lyrics. The music is pure pop in the Beatles' vein, with instant hooks that make the music instantly accessible. The highlight of the album, the incredible "Julie Christie," is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and it is for that song alone this album is worth owning. A sweet song of life's disappointments with a beautiful orchestra arrangement, Duffy's voice is warm and near perfect. Although the rest of the album never reaches the caliber of that song, there is still a great deal to enjoy. The music has a much more upbeat sound than 1995's The Ups and Downs, but Duffy continues to write about the broken down and broken-hearted. Fans will love this album, and how could anyone not love an album with this title?
