Sly & The Family Stone - Backtracks (1999)

The first five tracks here certainly sound like the Family Stone, although there's no information supplied to suggest when they were recorded (or by whom). But the rest of the album was recorded between 1963 and 1965 by Sly Stone (nee Sylvester Stewart), during his dues paying period as a producer for the West Coast indie label Autumn Records.

These tracks make for an interesting snapshot of an early '60s pop moment, running the gamut as they do from R&B and pop-rock, to fake live tracks ("Seventh Son") in emulation of Johnny Rivers. There's also a tribute to the Rolling Stones' album track "2120 South Michigan Avenue" in "Buttermilk Pt. 1."
