Retrospection, rounding up, rejoicing. The last instrumental sonatas by Johannes Brahms conjure up the calm, golden days of late September by Bad Ischl, where the composer spent twelve summers. These works, written in 1894, were composed for a famous clarinettist of the time, Richard Mühlfeld. Brahms was so moved by Mühlfeld’s playing that once more, for the last time, he took up the genre of instrumental chamber music, and these notes fall like autumn leaves, concluding an incom- parably rich oeuvre.
