Beethoven stands for fascinating music that moves our minds, but also for an attitude, an approach to art. It should be independent, free-spirited, unconventional, groundbreaking, visionary.
What Beethoven was to classical music, Astor Piazzolla is to tango. From a young age, he was successful as a bandoneon player in famous tango orchestras, but soon stopped tango almost entirely. He was looking for something else, a different purpose. He studied classical composers like Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky, he studied orchestral conducting with Hermann Scherchen and he listened a lot to jazz. His search for his own style obsessed him; he longed for something different, something new. He wanted to push the boundaries of traditional tango.
On 16 December 2020, it will be 250 years since Beethoven was born. Carel Kraayenhof and the Matangi Quartet would like to celebrate that, but in a special way.
Shortly afterwards, 11 March 2021 is the 100th anniversary of Astor Piazzolla's birth. Matangi and Carel see a musical challenge in connecting these two great icons of the music world. Beethoven and Piazzolla's own 'mannerisms' are precisely why the quartet and the bandoneon virtuoso feel so akin to these two greats; these five musicians do not always colour within musical lines and do not allow themselves to be tamed by musical rules and classical usages.
