G3 makes soundsystem music like you’ve never quite heard it before. Steeped in UK club history, this London producer drops bassweight with a soft touch, cushioning dubstep, grime and other chest-shaking styles with soft textures and playful melody. His latest album is his wisest and wittiest work yet, capping off ten years of his unique Little Corner label. These tunes don’t hog the limelight, but they offer rich rewards to those who’ll stop to listen.
G is a diaristic account of the two years in which it was made, and it runs the span of G3’s sound. The drum tracks are laser-precise but gentle on impact. The synth miniatures tug at the emotions and hint at worlds beyond their short runtimes. G3 spent lockdown studying the music of Brazil, and his fascination pops up in unexpected ways. On opener “453”, a Baile funk beat tugs against quirky synth-pop indebted to Ryuichi Sakamoto. (The title is a reference to G3’s homeward-bound bus route in SE London). Second single “Nº 4” is a nod to one of G3’s production heroes The Neptunes; he slices its minimalist percussion into grime-style 8-bar chunks. Across G, styles are thrown together in effortless combos, and familiar club sounds are made fresh.
A cassette edition includes a limited edition riso print of the artwork, by Swiss illustrator Mathias Forbach (aka Fichtre!). G was mixed by Alex “Bok Bok” Sushon and mastered by Beau @ Ten Eight Seven.
