"A piano trio in jazz is what a string quartet once was in classical music: a laboratory for testing new ideas. Pianist Bill Evans has been exploring the possibilities of interaction in this laboratory since the late 1950s. The trio of Hungarian pianist Robert Shakchi Lakatos with Swiss bassist Raffaele Bossar and Swiss drummer Dominic Egli still follows this tradition today. Egli and Lakatosh worked in various constellations They had been together for a quarter of a century and had already released several productions together, and Egli and Bossar toured together for about twice as long.
Such arrangements can be built if the conditions of a joint project are quite limited and these recordings were made over two days within a few hours at the Basel Jazz Campus. Which, of course, is not unusual for jazz. The freshness and joy of this meeting can definitely be heard in every track.
The repertoire for this session is ideal under the circumstances, adapted: two standards from the Great American Songbook (I Fall In Love Too Easily, I'm Getting Sentimental Over You), two jazz classics (Bop-Be, Black Nile), a piece from South Africa (Lakutshon'ilanga) and three homegrown from the Lakatos family. It is in them that the music lover Robert Shakchi Lakatosh perfectly manifests himself. The title track and the blues were written by him, and the opening part, written by brother Lakatos' Béla, is a declaration of love to the Gypsies." Peter Buerli
