We waited over 20 years..but finally Vince Watson is releasing the long awaited follow up to his seminal Moments In Time album on Ibadan and Alola entitled ‘Another Moment In Time’.
'Moments In Time’ was a huge success when released on New York’s Ibadan label, as well as Alola in the UK, and was at the time [2001] his 2nd album. Since its release and this one, there have been more than 10 more albums of various flavours, but it was finally time to return to the vibe and feel of the early works.
‘Another Moment In Time’ wastes no time in exploring those rich melancholic tones with 2 of the main features on the album being beautiful piano chords and a real essence of nostalgia that’s deeply satisfying. The album takes Vince further into this sound than his earlier works were able to, but now with a pristine quality and finesse that the early work lacked.
There are many highs, from the title track opener with its rich acid deepness and subtle keys, to the energetic and deeply fulfilling ‘Flashback’ at the end of the album, giving a nod with your hands in the air to Funk d’Void’s Diablo or KiNK.
There is some very notable moments in between. ‘Peace Of Mind’ features the incredible talents of Underground Resistance/Timeline keyboard played Jon Dixon as a co-writer, and this combination of both musicians is an ear to behold. The piano and Rhodes playing is straight up high tech jazz. An original version of 'Peace Of Mind' is also available as a Bandcamp Exclusive featuring on Vince on keys himself.
‘Lost In The Deep’ also takes its cue’s from Detroit House but hits the spot differently with its twisting chords and grooves.
‘Whispers’ perhaps delivers the most melancholic deepness in the album and hits the sound of the early albums.
‘Sunshine’ is just a pure out and out happy album track, also with twisting chords and a foundation in Detroit House, but it was written on the first sunny day after the winter and you can hear the breathe of relief.
‘Rendezvous [Finale] is the 3rd and final version of a tracks thats had quite a long and satisfying journey. Originally released on Carl Craig’s Planet E in 2006, it was then formatted into Afro House for Osunalde’s Yoruba records in 2018, and in 2022 this new version was debuted for Carl Cox’s Birthday at DC10 in Ibiza for Vince’s liveset and the reaction sealed the deal.
‘Forever’ and ‘Make A Wish’ are straight up club tunes and featured on a single in 2022. The album then finishes with the peaceful and beautiful ‘Sleep’ rounding things off perfectly.
20 years is a long time to wait for something. It would do ‘Another Moment In Time’ an injustice to simply say it was worth the wait. It’s more than that…it feels like the next evolution in Vince Watson’s output may have just begun. The finesse in the music, the musicality, musicianship and the production levels are extremely high and I cant help feeling ‘Peace Of Mind’ and ‘Flashback’ may well turn out to be 2 of the biggest tracks that VW has released to date.
An incredible journey….and yes, worth the wait.
