Guiseppe Verdi inherited from Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti the tradition of glorious vocal melody, and added to it a sense of drama that has never been excelled. Though he evolved a style of enormous subtlety and expressive range across his 28 operas, the element that binds his entire creative output together is his almost peerless ability to write soaring, memorable melodies. Though rooted in the voice, the best of his arias, choruses and ensembles retain their character and emotional impact in textless settings as Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops demonstrate beautifully in this collection of Verdi Without Words.
