Natalia Beylis conjures a spellbinding metaphoric trip down the River Shannon, inflected with a new age ambient air of gaelic myth and weft with instrumental storytelling for the excellent Touch Sensitive - home to Elaine Howley, Autumns, David Holmes
Natalia’s 5th solo album ‘Mermaids’ was inspired by serendipity and heritage. The discovery of a CRB Elettronica Ancona - Model: Diamond 708 E electric keyboard from the local tip and a sepia-toned photo of her mother in the ocean, found by her father in a family scrapbook, prompted Beylis to imagine a floating body of work that shimmers with silty, subaquatic qualities and evokes the flow of the river linking Ireland’s north and south. It is a quietly hopeful and lushly engaging album, effortlessly enchanting in its stream of extended melodic thought and synaesthetic sound imagery.
Recorded at home in Leitrim, and at a neighbour Mat Warren’s Studio Moo Moo (a converted cow shed), the six-part album feels guided by lowkey supernatural spirits from the Lieven Martens-esque underwater fantasy sequence ‘Afloat in the Fog and Feathers’ to its waking dream conclusion of Ernest Hood-like scenes peppered with grubbing chickens, ‘A Visit to Yasmin’, via a standout 16 minute title piece that evokes aspects of Teresa Winter’s ‘Drowning by Numbers’. We imagine it all makes an ideal accompaniment to summer jaunts in the country, or at least leaves the impression of travel for those without the time or bus fare.
