After a long eclipse, alto saxophonist Anthony Ortega enjoyed a comeback in the late '90s. At age 73, he released two strong CDs, one on hatOLOGY (Scattered Clouds), the other on the brand new French label AJMI Series. Bonjour" (the quotation mark is intentional) was recorded live in Avignon on March 15, 2001, at the end of a short tour of France. For the occasion, Ortega's acolytes were Rémi Charmasson (guitar), Guillaume Seguron (double bass), and Randy Kaye (drums). A creative player of bop allegiance, Ortega makes up in tone and lyricism what he lacks in audacity. The set begins and ends with Johnny Mercer standards. That's where the saxophonist shines, definitely more comfortable with a light swing. He leaves more room for the other players in his own compositions, especially in "Bonjour," where Charmasson and Seguron turn the piece into something very exciting. The freeform "Napoléon" provides another highlight, even though the leader is clearly surpassed by his backing band. Parker and the Coltrane of "Naima" filter through his rendition of Mona Ørbeck's "Round and Round." Bonjour" is beautifully recorded and a worthy addition to Ortega's short discography, if not an essential item. It can even be of interest to jazz purists.~ François Couture
