Les Sonates du Rosaire ne recèlent pas seulement des mystères, elles-mêmes en sont un. Biber réalisa avec ce cycle de quinze sonates, augmenté d'une Passacaille sans basse, l'une des plus étonnantes créations de la littérature pour violon. Célèbre aujourd'hui sans toutefois avoir résolu toutes ses énigmes, le cycle des Sonates du Rosaire est dédié aux mystères sacrés de la tradition catholique. Le procédé de la "scordature", l'accord changé des quatre cordes du violon, transgressant ainsi les règles habituelles de l'accord, élèvent le compositeur à un sommet artistique et exige de l'exécutant un réajustement permanent de sa pensée. Pour la violoniste française Hélène Schmitt cependant, les Sonates du Rosaire ne sont justement pas un sport dangereux, au contraire l'oeuvre incarne pour elle un véritable credo musical. Avec son jeu, la violoniste ouvre dans chacune des sonates les infinies perspectives d'un gigantesque univers sonore.
Chantant ou même parlant, chuchotant ou même encore fulminant, oppressant ou tendre, intime ou follement extériorisé, du son le plus ineffable jusqu' au pur Heavy Metal, ou plus simplement juste dans la bonne mesure pour tous ces mouvements de danses, l'auditeur est souvent pétrifié et n'en revient pas d'étonnement.
La totale dévotion d'Hélène Schmitt à cette musique est manifeste. Le groupe international de continuistes à ses côtés la soutient parfaitement et lui prodigue un splendide spectre de couleurs sonores. Parallèlement, les deux amples textes que le livret offre, rédigés par la violoniste et par le grand musicologue Peter Wollny (directeur du Bach Archiv à Leipzig) éclairent à chaque page autant l'oeuvre que l'interprétation. L'enregistrement audiophile réalisé dans l'église baroque de Holthausen délivre un son sur super audio CD avec Surround sound.
