We are sure all older jazz fans will know the story of how The Poll Winners came into existence, but we thought it would be wise to clue our growing legion of young fans into the events leading up to their formation way back in the jazz heyday of the 1950s. Looking back it was a fairly simple and I guess obvious thing for the three successful jazzmen to do, but by getting together they formed one of the great jazz trios in jazz history. Famed drummer Shelly Manne, legendary guitarist Barney Kessel and bass player extraordinaire Ray Brown had all been winning various solo jazz polls in the popular jazz mags of the day including Metronome and DownBeat. So it seemed an obvious move for the three legends to get together and form a trio. The guys became so revered and successful that they would go on to win readers polls in DownBeat, Metronome and Playboy in 1956 and 1957.
