Inspired by Appalachian folk harmonies, 80's synth soundtracks, and ghosts, the music of Artemisia is spaciously eerie, like meeting a lover in a haunted house. Selene Ross (vocals, ukulele, guitar, dulcimer, autoharp) and Alisa Rose (vocals, harp, guitar) first met in the Berkeley Hills in 2018. After a couple years of playing occasional house shows, they recorded an EP together in the Joshua Tree desert in early 2021, guided by the gentle Anthony Ferraro (Toro y Moi, Astronauts, etc.). With the addition of Ariel Wang on violin, the trio was complete. In the summer of 2022 Artemisia recorded their first full-length album, Catastrophe Darling, with Maryam Qudus (Spacemoth) at Tiny Telephone Recording in Oakland. If the EP was Artemisia's first chapter, this album is the expanded cinematic universe. The same shimmering, eerie, ghostfolk sound is still very much there, but with the addition of a string quartet they branch out into soaring cinematic ballads, dreamy witchpop dance tracks, and spin back around into vintage lullabies.
