The Summertimes (Australia) have two songwriters who are both named David – David Beniuk and David Challenger. Fortunately, that is about the least interesting part of this new band. They recently releaserd their debut album, and clearly, these Davids know their way around a tune! Listen to album standout Inside for example, a relatable song about unanswered love that comes with a quality video.
If the band’s name and art direction ignites power pop associations, you are absolutely right. The Summertimes namedrop The Go Betweens, Teenage Fanclub, You Am I and The Jam as influences, and I’d add their countrymen Hoodoo Gurus and The Someloves as a comparable in terms of sound. Speaking of quality, the Davids were joined in the studio by Ashley Naylor (Paul Kelly and The Church), Steve O’Brien (Tumbleweed) and Steve Bull (Icehouse), with the renowned Paul McKercher (You Am I, Hoodoo Gurus, Eskimo Joe, and Midnight Oil) as a producer. Together, they’ve created a debut that is full of memorable hooks and songs that are instantly likeable yet get better with each play. It is out now on Rank and File Records.
