Inspired by the vast potential of the tonal foundation of music, at a time when many of his contemporaries were embracing the twelve tone ideology, the eminent German composer Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling produced a rich, varied and highly personal body of work. The 1956 Sinfonia diatonica for small orchestra, which here receives its world première recording, is characterized by filigree craftsmanship and a lithe classicism that are very refreshing in the context of the German post-war symphony. The 1963 Symphony in C, scored for a much larger orchestra, including triple woodwind and brass, is notable for its inventive structure, increased harmonic and tonal freedom, and a restless yet organic contrast of dynamism and lyricism.
Schwarz-Schilling: Orchestral Works, Vol. 2
01. Polonaise
02. Partita: I. Entrata - Allegr
03. Partita: II. Tan
04. Partita: III. Canzona: Breit, feierlic
05. Partita: IV. Etwas brei
06. Violin Concerto: I. Ouverture: Poco sostenuto - Allegro vivo
07. Violin Concerto: II. Ari
08. Violin Concerto: III. Finale. Allegro con spirito
The so-called 'lost generation' of German composers includes many whose lives were shaped by events after 1933. One such was Reinhard Schwarz-Schilling, a composer of strong spiritual depth whose 1953 Violin Concerto was rooted in his wartime experiences. Ingeniously constructed, it subtly evokes the influence of Bach, without at all embracing neo-classicism. Its moving slow movement is followed by a finale that marries virtuosity with dance-like magnetism. The Partita is much admired for its colour and vitality, whilst the Polonaise is a lighter work, brimming with high spirits. GRAMMY-®-winner conductor and composer Jos+ª Serebrier is one of today's most recorded classical artists. He has received 39 GRAMMY-® nominations in recent years. His First Symphony (8.559648) was premi+¨red by Leopold Stokowski (who premi+¨red several of his works) when Serebrier was 17, as a last-minute replacement for the then still unplayable Ives Fourth Symphony.
