The PHLIPS label, where Colin Davis has been recording since the 1960s, has many excellent performances and recordings, especially during the completion of analog recording in the 1970s. After this, Davis recorded twice on the London Symphony Orchestra, RCA, and LSO independent labels, and Sibelius was a composer Davis was good at along with Berlioz. Among them, this first recording from 1975 to 1980 contains 7 orchestral pieces, and is still popular as a masterpiece that boasts a deep-rooted popularity. He won the Finnish Sibelius Medal in 1977 and the French ADF Grand Prize the following year, and was highly acclaimed in Japan. Recording with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, who became the principal guest conductor in 1972, is also an interesting factor, and this recording by analog recording by the PHILIPS technical team, which was in the process of completion at that time, is still famous as an excellent recording board. Combined with the excellent reverberation of the hall and the timbre of the fresh Boston Symphony instruments of the time, the Sibelius tone, which is somewhat fantastical yet has a solid core, is particularly effective in SACD. This set includes all Sibelius recordings left by the same duo on the PHILIPS label for the first time in a 4-disc set.
