The Bach Guild's Big Harpsichord Box compiles the best of the harpsichord performances that the Bach Guild produced, mainly in a 10 year period from 1952 to 1962. During that time, the great early music pioneer Gustav Leonhardt was making his first important recordings as a soloist, and the Solomon brothers were expanding the boundaries of early, baroque and classical music by making many of the first recordings dedicated to the repertoire for the solo harpsichord and harpsichord with orchestral accompaniment.

We've focused almost exclusively on the solo harpsichord - we've included 6 rarely heard tracks of Haydn at the end of this box - because it also allows us to showcase the great harpsichordists who graced the Bach Guild roster. Of course, the first harpsichordist signed to Bach Guild/Vanguard was Gustav Leonhardt, and his groundbreaking performance of the Goldberg Variations is included here. The Art of the Fugue, performed here on harpsichord is also featured. The "house" harpsichordist, the always dependable Anton Heiller fills in some of the lovely French harpsichord repertoire, and the Soler works, which Heiller also performs with his wife, another respected harpsichordist in her own right.

George Malcolm's performances of Purcell were part of a ground-breaking series of Purcell recordings (led mainly by Alfred Deller), and we've gone in and plucked out the solo performances - ever tasteful and so well performed, it's a shame Mr. Malcolm didn't make more recordings either for the Bach Guild, or as a soloist in this time frame (late 1950s). And the American Kenneth Cooper brings his large harpsichord to Scarlatti. (By the way, unfortunately, this box could be far larger and include many lost recordings - but these recordings, which include 2 Handel recordings by Mr. Cooper, as well as some Handel suites performed by Mr. Heiller - remain in a condition unsuitable for release! We have never and don't plan on using LPs as masters - and the original tapes of these recordings are damaged, but we remain hopeful that replacements may be found.)

We do like to offer up some rarities and unheard recordings in these big boxes - this box doesn't offer any items that have been kept in the vaults. It's a showcase for those lovers of exceptional artists performing the great solo harpsichord works of the baroque and classical era.
