Pat Boone tries his hand with some well known C&W songs on 1965's The Golden Era of Country Hits, his first album venture into that genre. He had been successful with "Walkin' the Floor over You" and "Alabam." two terrific, country songs which were released as singles in 1960. But except for the distinct standout, "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes," Golden Era fails to achieve the spirit and energy of the two singles. This is not to say that there are not some good tracks here. Boone is in great form on the afore mentioned "Stars," turning up the '50s Perry Como hit several notches. He imparts a convincing, country feel to "Crazy Arms," immersing himself into it totally. And after some exposure, you get the feeling that Pat Boone has a particular bias toward this piece. "Wolverton Mountain" and "Singin' the Blues" are two more good tracks, but don't add anything new or better to the originals. While it should be noted that there is nothing sloppy or defective about the album, it must also be said that there is just not not a whole lot to get excited about. The choice of material is excellent and Boone's singing is straight from the heart. But still, overall, it falls a little flat.
