If Pat Boone had not gotten off to a fast start with some good, energy-charged (albeit cleaned-up) rock & roll and also an excellent debut album of standards, this particular effort may have gone some distance toward derailing his career early on, or at the very least hampering it. But he was going extremely strong, and one bad album was not about to put him away. If this work is viewed without the context of his other '50s material, it wouldn't be too bad, but in comparison it lags far behind. His attempts at Fats Domino's "I'm in Love Again" and Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" are bland and unconvincing -- and the other "rockers," as the liner notes call them, though not as weak, are not suited to Boone's style of rock & roll singing. Billy Vaughn, who has done some other fine work with Pat Boone, as well as on his own, flops badly here. His arrangements are simple and unimaginative, and along with a sparse chorus contribute their good share in giving these songs a watered-down treatment. "Flip Flop and Fly," "Money Honey," and "Shake a Hand" have little, really, to recommend.The best uptempo number is "Ernie Ford's Shot Gun Boogie," which manages to give off a few sparks. And "Honey Hush"'s lurking violence (" Don't make me nervous cause I'm holdin' a baseball bat") is delivered not unconvincingly. But in the end this album is saved by its three ballads, "Pledging My Love," "Tomorrow Night," and "Please Send Me Someone to Love," done in Boone's inimitable style.
