German conductor Kurt Sanderling (1912-2011) was Jewish, so he was expelled from his homeland in 1935 and moved to the Soviet Union where his uncle lived in 1936. From 1941, he joined the conductors of the Leningrad Philharmonic led by Mravinsky, received training from Mravinsky, and interacted with the great composer Shostakovich. In 1960, he returned to Japan at the request of the East German government and assumed the post of principal conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (currently the Berliner Konzerthaus Orchestra). This Shostakovich symphony collection was recorded in analog stereo by Eterna in East Germany from 1976 to 1983 when the relationship between the two matured. Sanderling's interpretation, which he interacted with the composer, makes the score faithful to every corner, expresses the accumulation of symphonic sounds deeply, and has a wide variety of characters, from Shostakovich's light humor to heartbreak. While making full use of these, they are wrapped in a soft and heavy sound unique to German orchestras. Therefore, even at the climax of the song, it never becomes screaming and maintains an organic sound, making it a standout performance among many exciting performances. However, as mentioned above, the scene of the changing music is fully expressed, and the most musical and meaningful Shostakovich performance has been achieved. Eterna's excellent recording of the end of analog also captures the magnificent, heavy and soft sound of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. With this high-quality sound, it became possible to understand even more details. It is a result that you can feel the atmosphere at the time of recording.
