Black Snow ("Qara Qaar" in Sakha). A soundtrack by Andrey Guryanov for the film by Stepan Burnashev.
STEPAN BURNASHEV (director):
"Black Snow" is a movie about the attitude to other people’s lives and about what a person is ready for his own. There is snow around everyone, and what color it will be — everyone chooses for himself.
I am not satisfied with the current way of our society — corruption, consumerism, greed, selfishness, alcoholism. I don’t want my children to grow up in such a world. After all, we are rich not only in material goods.
With this film, I want to say that there are problems, and they are terrible, you need to shout about them. The world is changing very quickly, and in the pursuit of adapting to new foundations, we stop thinking about the most essential things — mutual understanding, cooperation, humanity."
ANDREY GURYANOV (composer) about the work on the soundtrack:
Collaboration for me is one of the best ways to communicate and explore reality. I work in music, film sound, contemporary art, and theatre. And each time working with Yakut filmmakers makes me believe again in common sense, equality, dialogue, and the possibility of co-creation. Yakut cinema is absolutely not provincial, self-sufficient, and imbued with the spirit of mutual respect and a conscious attitude to the world. The way the interaction is arranged in the industry and within the filmmaking process can always be seen and heard in the result. And in the Yakut cinema, you can see what I idealistically imagine under the word "cinema" in general. I am very grateful to Stepan Burnashev for the fact that the approach I proposed was met by him with understanding and acceptance.
I asked him to write a few words about the film, and its idea. He wrote to me "it shouldn’t be like this anymore", I wrote my own sound interpretation of each of these words, Stepan edited these textures according to the scenes of the movie. I finally assembled them into the statement. This approach is simple, and certainly not new. But in Yakut cinema, like in many other ways of equal collaboration, it is possible, and I am grateful for this opportunity every time I work with Yakut filmmakers.
