Kait Dunton - Keyboards (2023)

This album documents the music I was writing and recording during 2022 when my following on Instagram really exploded. I started really focusing on the Fender Rhodes and the different effects pedals I could use with it. Some personal references include Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters to Richard Tee’s Stuff, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Weather Report, Earth, Wind & Fire, Hall and Oates & Michael McDonald. I would get inspired by a sound and create a groove or a little mini-soundscape to showcase it, purposefully not writing anything too complex in order to keep to my self-imposed schedule of posting 3x a week, every week. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was such an appreciative audience out there for the vintage sounds, and that I was lucky enough to tap into it. Jake Reed suggested that I record a full album to document these sounds. As I was only posting reels of 90 seconds - or less! - on Instagram, I did have to flesh things out a bit. But I attempted to stay true to what I had started with the groove-based compositions and vintage inspired sonic space. By the time we recorded the album in September 2022, Jake and Sean had been working together for a good number of years, and I had started working with Sean, as well. Their passion for finding and locking into a groove was a perfect fit for what I wanted to showcase with this album, so it was an easy choice to go into EastWest for two days and record this album together. An exciting bonus has been having incredible guitarist Andrew Synowiec join us for our live shows. Many of the songs on the album feature keyboard overdubs to fill out some of the rhythmic parts - something I can’t do live. Andrew adds so much sonic and rhythmic energy to the band… I hope to make an album with the four of us next!
