After his virtuoso double bass concertos, we now turn to three string quartets by Johann Matthias Sperger. As musicologists of earlier generations who took a deeper look at Sperger's compositional style noted the closeness to Mozart, and even more so to Haydn, this can also be observed here in the string quartets. However, even more far-reaching demands are placed on the viola and violoncello, which often take over virtuoso passages and merge into thematic material. Sudden striking Mozartian themes surprise the listener - echoes from the opera "Figaro" and hints of imitated Janissary music from Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" can be heard: Spirited, spherical with heavenly, graceful melodies!
