Yamaneko, now based in Japan, unveils his latest album Escape Artists Never Die, a spiritual successor to 2019’s Spirals Heaven Wide. Building on the trajectory set by Afterglow and his Spa Commissions series, it doubles as a milestone for the 1000Doors collective – their first full-length album release.
~ Faded memories of polarizing dance music ~
Escape Artists Never Die serves as an introspective meditation on euphoric melodies and hard dance styles, paying heartfelt tribute to the most formative music of Yamaneko's past, and the emotions they continue to evoke so potently. The album seamlessly weaves together the at once regional and international sounds of trance, makina, grime and donk, with other similarly polarizing energies from emo, trip-hop and reception area BGM.
Far away from the spas and hot springs, Yamaneko here seeks the the ambience of everyday solace in the tranquil spaces tucked within bustling city centers – the empty carparks, tower block lobbies, and underpasses that form the backdrop of modern urban life. The album's lead track, Kitana, best embodies this ethos: a self-described piece of "kankyō makina" that basks in the soft glow of endless vending machines. In contrast, Riposumin, harkens back to the familiar feel of his early Talbot Fade project, recalling the fogged-out sonic elements that eventually merged with Yamaneko's signature sound.
While Yamaneko's previous releases captured the misty stillness of a November in London, Escape Artists Never Die transports listeners to a rain-soaked, humid June in Tokyo. A dwelling, or getaway, and a home for one of his most honest reflections to date.
