Greyscale's 29th full length release is here for you to soak up. 'Anchorage' is the name of personal journey of survival for the new to Greyscale artist 'Phases of Gravity'. An audio scrapbook or audible journal of a special challenging time that they recount where when this Hungarian artist conducts and orchestrates their 'rebirth'. The sounds are stripped down to their primal essence like you hear in the title track. 'Coast Lining' adds the uncertainty and drama that provides a tense soundtrack to the inner journey. There are plenty of atmospheric and odd sounds to get lost in along the way like in the unsettling but highly addictive broken sound of 'Inhabiting the Forest'. A track that seems to be out of key off kilter but uniquely ties to an ancient dub sound that is all too familiar for the old skool heads - roots dub. Many of the rhythms are heavily tribal like in 'The Variety of Experience'. Deeply organic and ancient, they strike a core with all of our past roots. Other tracks take on a heavy human emotion of life like in 'Thickness of Soil' which is one of our early favorite's here at Greyscale. The vibe is eerie and thick with drone undertones. Yet, a strange funk seeps out to lead the track out safely to a close. Late in the album, 'Pathfinder' seems to us, the turning point in the album where optimism has finally taken root in the struggle of life that the author produces. Building blocks have an industrial sound while the atmosphere fills up the soundscape like a breath of fresh air. The artist isn't fully out of the woods yet as 'Wind-bound' takes on a fight or flight motif leading to 'Flutter' which leaves you still uncertain of the future. Phases of Gravity presents a striking album of tracks here that support a real-life dramatic story. And it succeeds at it brilliantly. Available on CD or digitally.
