“Great” was recorded twice in his lifetime, and this reprint uses the later 1964 recording in stereo. Even though the tempo is slower than that of conductors in the Dokdo area, the neat structure is very attractive. The arrangement that shows a romantic expression in the rich performance typical of Barbirolli is unique, and the driving force of the 4th movement is also splendid. This board was also slow to be released on CD, but it is being re-evaluated in Japan. The Halle Orchestra (music director: 1943-58) has known each other for many years, and their attentive conduct is well received. Isn't it an excellent result for those days? The coupling piece is a performance typical of Barbirolli, who was originally an opera conductor.
