Nessym is an electronic music composer with varied and cosmopolitan musical roots and influences. He composed his debut album Cannibal Comedy at about the same he started thinking of founding a record label with his friend Amine Metani in the early 2000s, and Cannibal Comedy was first self-released shortly before Shouka was founded, laying the foundations of what became the artistic identity of the label. Remastering and rereleasing this album to celebrate the 10 years anniversary of the label is therefore a well deserved tribute to one of Shouka's pioneers.
In this album, Nessym was strongly inspired by bepop jazz music, the dark atmospheres of American dancing clubs of the 1950s, and Polish black and white cinema, paying a tribute to his early childhood spent in socialist Poland in the 1980s. By mixing Arabic, Latin, Afro-jazz and Trip-Hop sounds, digging into his abyssal collection of improbable samples, he creates an eclectic album that reflects the variety of sounds that influenced his musical life.
The title "Cannibal Comedy" is a way of deflecting the stereotypes and expectations associated with different labels imposed on musical and cultural genres. By playing on the contrast between the terms, Nessym invites the audience to liberate themselves from prejudices and embrace the diversity of music without the need for ready-made boxes. This album is a synthesis, a syncretism of his musical and cultural influences, as Nessym embraces and devours different influences to reinvent himself in his own way.
