Interzone (Nonclassical, 2023) contemplates an experience moving between dream and waking, inner world and outer landscape, and an idea of constant change and perpetual motion.
Two defined elements emerge from Interzone: a careful use of electronics, and Scrutton’s experimental vocal practice. The album was recorded in two steps. The Interzone tracks that thread through the album were created by the artist herself in her Glasgow studio, using voice, field recordings and archival materials. For the other series of tracks, Nichola worked with sound engineer Jim McEwan to record the two Quartets, and the Trio and Solo movements. These focus on sculpting the voice sound in real-time and extended vocal techniques: the literal ‘liveness’ of live performance influenced those studio sessions.
Nichola Scrutton is a Glasgow-based award-winning composer, vocalist, sound and visual artist who works across a range of mediums and processes including sound art and soundscape composition, performance, radio art, improvisation, writing and drawing. She has extensive experience as a collaborator in interdisciplinary and participatory contexts
