A fine tenor saxophonist, Jay Collins' CD stands out from the crowd due to its strong repertoire and the combination of musicians. Among the tunes that he explores are his minor blues "Jesse Reaches the Sky," a cooking version of "Dearly Beloved" (which is usually played slower), a forceful rendition of Thelonious Monk's "Played Twice," a rare revival of McCoy Tyner's "Aisha," and a hard-charging "With a Song in My Heart." In addition, the ancient "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is transferred into a swinging jazz tune in 5/4 time. Collins has plenty of competition and inspiration from the two other main soloists, vibraphonist Joe Locke (who is in top form) and pianist Kenny Barron, but plays so well that he is not overshadowed. Recommended.
