Strong original compositions, along with three unusual arrangements of well-known standards, pack a rich array of feeling into 56 minutes.
Both quartets feature the members of Pintchik’s working trio: Pintchik on piano, Scott Hardy on bass and Mark Dodge on drums. In the first quartet, the trio is joined by percussionist Satoshi Takeishi; that group, remarks Pintchik, is “more like a trio with percussion. Satoshi gave the music an orchestral quality, and deepened it with the balanced asymmetry of his colors and rhythm.”
In the second quartet, the trio is joined by saxophonist Steve Wilson; that group has the strengths of a more traditional jazz quartet, and showcases the group’s beautifully buoyant swing, Latin grooves and ballad playing. Of her band-mate Steve Wilson, Pintchik comments: “Steve is a composer’s dream: he plays with passion, integrity, great beauty and also restraint, when the music calls for it.”
By choosing to split the material between two divergent quartets, Pintchik is able to showcase several distinctive facets of her musical voice, as well as the wide-ranging emotional palette of her original compositions.
