The bouncing beats and complex rhythms of footwork meets the soulful melodies of traditional Japanese minyo in J/P/N, the latest album from Kyoto-based artist KASAI.
Following on from his 2021 album “OWN ℃” which was released under his previous alias Jap Kasai, KASAI expands his maximalist electronic sound, centring his vocals and finding new and unexpected rhythms as footwork is reimagined through a warped, otherworldly lens.
The album’s fourth track, 唄ヨォー, is a hypnotic dirge, with KASAI’s undulating minyo vocals wrapping themselves around echoing drums, as footwork beats skitter mischievously into a crescendo. On the final track, 藪梅, KASAI expands into incorporating a 4/4 club beat in between his louche vocals, making a lush, danceable track with his idiosyncratic charm turned all the way up.
A bubbling internal network of logic propels J/P/N forward. Reflecting on the album title, KASAI says: “’J/P/N’ is the country code of Japan. At the same time, I give it another meaning. It is ‘Jimoto Private Network’. ‘Jimoto (地元)’ means region (or local) in English. So, it means ‘Inter-regional Private Network.’”
J/P/N was made alongside raising his child and running a small farm – and playing gigs in a fish market. Filled with bursts and drifts of his own luminous, insectoid electronic sounds, the irrepressible album feels as richly textured and complex as the natural world and its inter-connected inhabitants.
“Japanese folk songs were originally rooted in different regions of Japan,” KASAI explains. “Minyo was spread by private networks of people. Minyo also travelled to other regions as goods were distributed through trade and other means. Cool voices, rhythms, breaks, and lyrics influenced other regions’ songs.”
“In this way, minyo influenced each other, changed its form, and was sung in many different places by many different people. I wanted to express the dynamic aspect of minyo before it was confined to the geography of a country.”
