Ivan Jullien – Complete Riviera Recordings (1966-68/2012)

Jullien initially studied architecture for the sake of his parents and also worked briefly in the monument inspection, but then went to the Navy and spent the years 1952 to 1954 in the Indochina War. From 1956 he got by in Paris with numerous jobs and also began to play the trumpet, which he made his main occupation in the jazz and variety scene from 1957. He played in the orchestras of Jacques Hélian, Alix Combelle, Claude Bolling and in the Orchester des Olympia and accompanied jazz musicians such as Lester Young, Benny Bailey, Bud Powell, Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon and Maynard Ferguson. From 1964 he played for two years with Johnny Hallyday, for whom he also arranged. In 1968 he performed with Jean-Claude Naude, Sonny Gray and Roger Guérin in a trumpet workshop for the ORTF. He has also arranged for orchestra, for the studio and for various singers such as Sacha Distel, Claude Nougaro, Charles Aznavour, Michel Jonasz, Charles Trenet and Françoise Hardy. In total, he wrote thousands of arrangements over the course of time. In addition, he composed and arranged film music, e.g. B. he arranged for Claude Lelouch a man and a woman (Un Homme et une femme). From 1983 he also taught music analysis and arrangement (orchestration). From 2006 he published the first volumes of a Traité de l'arrangement.

Jullien also organized several big bands (1965, 1972, 1978, 1983), with which he also recorded, but which only existed for a short time for financial reasons. In 1993 he arranged "Carmen Jazz" for Dee Dee Bridgewater at the festival in Vienna and in 2001 French chansons for Michel Leeb as jazz tracks, which were performed with the Count Basie Orchestra.

In 1971 he received the Prix Django Reinhardt. For "Porgy and Bess" from 1971 with Eddy Louiss he received the Prix Boris Vian. In 2003 he received a “Victoires de la Musique” for his complete works. He is "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres".
