On Ivan Cunningham’s newest album "One Eye Closed/One Leg Lifted", the Minneapolis-based musician is more of a conductor than he is any one particular kind of instrumentalist. Knowing when to sing gently and when to squeal, Cunningham leads a circus ring of fellow collaborators who embrace fun house mirror sounds, erratic saxophones, and distorted keyboards. Tracks that come in elaborate stages boast local DIY experimental artists like Xochi de la Luna and Larry Wish, as well as multidisciplinary artists and composers such as Moonear Khar and Davu Seru. Cunningham’s darting sounds are also influenced by his continuous collaboration with Zeitgeist New Music Ensemble. As a part of the new generation of New Music artists, Cunningham fuses experimental music and prog rock, living in an avant-indulgence that respects chops and play in equal parts.
