Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Bizet and Chopin, all invading the dance-floor… it sounds like someone’s dreaming! In the latter half of the Thirties, Tommy Dorsey dipped their works in swing, too, and was quickly copied by other big-bands of the day. Great soloists, with Art Tatum in the lead, also seized on the classical repertoire, and the small group led by bassist John Kirby produced one of the greatest successes of the genre.
