BETWEEN FOLK HISTORY AND FOLK MUSIC: THE ENVIROMENT iN WHICH GOLLU EMERGED
Karachays and Balkars (who refer to themselves as “taulula”) are a Turkic-speaking people mainly residing in Karachay-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria. Traditional Karachay-Balkar music is rarely performed on the independent stage or within the folklore niche. Modern and retro pop music can be found (e.g., on the Makame Dahe label), but ritual or heroic songs are seldom performed by modern musicians, both amateur and professional. There are a few ensembles that honour the legacy of Soviet vocalist and folklore collector Omar Otarov, but original harmonists and accordionists who preserve the original Karachay-Balkarian sound are hard to find even in villages.
Gollu's approach is to remain true to the original sound and to reconstruct traditional styles. They do not use modern instruments, avoid experimentation, and maintain a traditional performing style. This approach is inspired by the legendary ensemble Zhyu, which continues to influence young musicians in the region.
Gollu is a real, authentic, and modern band that sings its own songs rather than restoring the music of their ancestors. Their debut album, "Caz" (the word sounds close to “jazz”), opens a series of releases focused on calendar ritual songs and melodies, symbolizing change and awakening, not just in music, but in other aspects of life as well.
The musicians of the Circassian group Myst helped to record the album, which is also important both musically and in terms of building new relationships in the region.
