100th anniversary of von Neumann's birth. The latest reprint of Neumann's first "My Motherland", a masterpiece from the Gewandhaus Orchestra era. A masterpiece that makes you feel a strong attachment to the work with a more robust expression than the later Czech Philharmonic. Excellent recording board. World's first SACD!
Václav Neumann (1920-95), one of the representative records recorded during his tenure as music director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra (1964-68), which succeeded Konwitschny, all the songs of "My Motherland" are original songs from his home country. Newly reprinted from the analog master tape. "Prague Spring" The masterpiece left in the previous year has been vividly revived. After this, Neumann assumed the post of Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (1968-89) as successor to Ancerl, and "My Motherland" was recorded in a session on SUPURAPHON in 1975 (reprinted as a SACD hybrid board planned by Tower in March 2020 on TWSA1068. It is often compared with this 1967 edition because it later leaves the sound source in the live performance, but although the basics of Neumann's approach to each song are the same, the performance is different. The biggest difference is the difference in the orchestra, the difference in the instruments used mainly for tubes, and the difference in sound quality that comes from the recording side because the label is different. Other than that, isn't it largely in Neumann's stance? As can be seen with other conductors, there is a kind of tension and high tension that occurs when a Czech conductor performs with a non-Czech orchestra. The high quality of the Gewandhaus Orchestra at that time was undoubtedly influenced, and there may be a difference between the attitude of nostalgia and the sense of security and stability. Unlike SUPRAPHON in terms of recording, it is a solid recording that emphasizes musical instruments, and here the engineer Struben's masterpiece shines. In general, the name recognition is different compared to the SUPRAPHON board, but this recording, which can be said to be another answer of Neumann, can also be said to be a masterpiece representing this song.
