100th anniversary edition of Peter Mark's birth. Mozart's symphony for DECCA, orchestral music, etc. are recorded on two discs.
The famous Swiss-born conductor Peter Mark (1919-2001), who celebrated his 100th birthday this year (2019), has made a number of impressive record recordings and made frequent visits to Japan since 1962. He was a familiar presence in the house. This SA-CD hybrid disc contains two sets of Mozart's works that he recorded in stereo at Decca in England in 1959 at the age of 40 (this time, the horn concerto with Tuckwell is not included).
The relationship between Mark and British Decca is old and started in October 1950 during the monaural LP era. The song was Mozart's 29th Symphony. It can be seen that his talent as a Mozart conductor was recognized from that time. Then, in January 1959, Symphonies Nos. 32 and 38 and German Dances were recorded on the newly developed stereo. The stereo LP of the two symphonies was acclaimed by British magazine Gramophone for the variety of tone and mood it gave to each passage, as well as the clarity and expanse of the recording. In November 1959, he recorded a clarinet concerto with British virtuoso Gervase de Peyet (1926-2017). Gramophone magazine praised De Peyet's "expressive music making, combining fluid virtuosity with beautiful tones", excellent orchestral support, and "highly recommended" for the balance of the recording. In December 1959, he recorded four interludes from Serenade No. 8 "Notturno" and Serenade No. 6 "Serenata Notturno", the opera "Lucio Silla" overture, and the heroic play "Thamos King of Egypt". Gramophone magazine noted Mark's "exemplary purity of phrasing", and the four solos in "Serenata Notturno" and the oboe mastery of "Tamos, King of Egypt." He said, "The recording is also excellent," and the arrangement of the four orchestras in "Notturno" is realistic and suitable for stereo demonstration.
