In the spring of 2021, the Jyväskylä Sinfonia recorded some very sparse music by Per Henrik Nordgren at Mikael in Mikkeli. The three works heard on the album – Streams, Cello Concerto No. 5 and Chamber Symphony – are written for slightly different Chamber Orchestra ensembles, and thus offer a representative view of Nordgren's ringing thinking, combining both small and large scale. The recording was conducted by Ville Matvejeff, principal conductor of the Jyväskylä Symphony, and the cello concerto was interpreted by Tuomas Ylinen. The album cover features the work white power I. Valo and Nordgren met in Kaustis.
"Streams". "currents” or "currents") is a work originally commissioned by the Vantaa Music Institute, which premiered on 2.11.1991. it is dedicated to the headmaster of the College, Jarmo Ahvenainen, with whom Nordgren also collaborated: as a viola player, Ahvenainen had premiered Nordgren's first two Viola concertos in the 1970s.
The fifth Cello Concerto is one of Nordgren's last works and is dedicated to cellist Erkki Rautio. The new concerto began in the summer of 2004, when Rautio and guitarist Petri Kumela premiered Nordgren's klippgrund for cello and guitar. This powerful and visionary cello playing aroused in Nordgren a spontaneous desire to compose yet another Cello Concerto. Rautio premiered the Concerto under conductor Okko Kamu as soloist of the Tapiola Sinfonietta in Espoo on 18.11.2005.
The Chamber Symphony was commissioned by the Lahti Chamber Music Society, which had started to invest heavily in New Music in the 1990s. The work premiered in Lahti on 21.11.1996 under the direction of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra's principal conductor Osmo Vänskä. Nordgren did not count the work among his eight numbered symphonies, as did his earlier Symphony for Strings.
