Aladura Songs Book finds two-time Grammy Award-winning percussionist Lekan Babalola – Lagos, Nigeria-born and living in his adopted Birmingham (UK) since 2010 – paying effervescent tribute to his musically polymathic father, Amos ‘AO’ Olayiwola Babalola. The Aladura of the title refers to the Nigerian Christian sect of the ‘Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim’ founded in 1925, for whom ‘AO’ wrote copious hymns. What results is a fizzing mélange, equal parts devotion, homage and celebration, mashing together Babalola senior's eclectic musical signature – a melting pot into which were poured accents drawn from apala, sakara, jùjú, Afrobeat and waka liberally laced with influences from further afield including blues, jazz, soca and country & western – with Babalola junior's own brass-led instincts, exultant on the simultaneously percussive and poetic ‘Shine On, Bright Star’. Co-produced with Reuben Reynolds, it's an affectionate, infectious proposition best summed up by ‘I Walk With Faith’, Babalola's vocals augmented by Kate Luxmoore's clarinet, Xhosa Cole's saxophone and close-harmony backing singers. Rapper Tarju Le'sano adds a contemporary note to the peppy ‘Heavenly Father’ and delirious ‘Loke Odojordani’. The album sleeve lists seven songs, all treated to vocal and instrumental versions on Soundcloud.
