May 15th will mark the 150th birthday of Nikolai Tcherepnin, heir of “The Five”, almost exact contemporary of Rachmaninov, whose underrated and rarely recorded music bears witness to his admiration for the French impressionists. The Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda, who was a noted performer of Russian melodies due to his ancestry, recorded with Tcherepnin’s son Alexander a selection of romances, some of which have never been performed on record otherwise.
They are coupled with seventeen melodies of Rachmaninov accompanied by Alexis Weissenberg, making their digital debut.
