Superpitcher’s first appearance on Kompakt was on a Total compilation, with the understated beauty of “Shadows”, from the second volume in the series. Aksel Schaufler (who is Superpitcher) soon became synonymous with a certain strain of Kompakt music: elegant, romantic, refined, but also risky and thrilling, Superpitcher productions cast spells on listeners, bringing them into Schaufler’s world. And you can chart Superpitcher’s many moods via his contributions to the Total series; “Baby’s On Fire”, for example, from Total 4, borrows a stanza from Brian Eno, repeats it as a hypnotic refrain, and jacks it to a thudding glitter-beat.

The following year’s “Mushroom” is one of Schaufler’s most iconic tracks, a trippy slice of melancholy techno, a misty, early morning folksong for the dancefloor. By the time of “Disko! (You Don’t Care)” and “Lapdance”, things are getting deeply dippy – the staccato vocal edits and morphing, squelching electronics of the former matched by the surreal chants and deep stomp of the latter. There’s the reflective, gentle piano phrase that chimes through “Tell Me About It”, with an Aaliyah-esque voice drifting across the skin of the song; fast forward a decade, and the hollowed-out chimes and whispery recorder of “Freiherr” see-saw across your mind’s ear, psychedelic and delirious.

There’s always something seductive at the core of Superpitcher music, though. Its sensuous slide is unlike anything else in dance music. Informed by Schaufler’s musical loves – reggae, glam, ‘80s English pop – Schaufler takes the spatial delirium, glitzy moves, and self-aware charm of each of those genres and places them in service to his unique vision, one of late-night intimacy, with a little, gentle surrealism along the way. Total devotion.
