Unbeknownst to many, Friedman was also a composer, the author of over 100 piano, chamber and vocal pieces, and thus he had the privilege of viewing music from the perspective of both performer and creator. Many recordings of this piano prodigy have survived, allowing modern listeners to appreciate his style and mastery (a comprehensive six-CD re-mastered edition has recently been released). Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of his own works, which we know only from a few recordings of selected piano pieces. Although he did perform and record hundreds of compositions by other composers, made numerous transcriptions and editions, his personal chamber and vocal works have been forgotten. What you are holding is the first recording of Ignacy Friedman’s songs for solo voice with piano, a world phonographic premier.
