Jordan Stanley - A Cry for the Moon (2023)

The Edinburgh experimental composer Jordan Russell-Hall, aka Jordan Stanley, makes his debut on Bytes with his exceptional second album, A Cry For The Moon. There are shades of his Scottish contemporaries Hudson Mohawke and Rustie in these colourful experiments in microsampling. Jordan says: "Many of the synth chords are made up of minuscule samples of existing songs which have been warped to the point that they are virtually unrecognisable and create a cohesive sound that feels unique.”

Like a magpie snaffling shiny objects for its nest, Jordan has procured samples from all corners of the electronic and pop music realm - from Charli XCX and Mr Mitch to Ariana Grande and Jimmy Edgar - to help form his vivid sound palette. With the addition of vibrant synths, frenetic Jersey Club-influenced rhythms and lush ambience we find an album of futuristic glitch-techno bangers that, according to the artist will “take you on a trip through a desolate city under the cover of thick fog and a firework display."

Jordan’s debut album, Empty for Hundred, was released on Salmon Universe (the wonderful cassette label run by Richard Pike, aka Deep Learning, and JQ) in 2021. He recently supported TVAM (Invada Records) in Edinburgh and hopes to perform A Cry For The Moon live later this year.
