"Il Sol dell'Avvenire, directed by Nanni Moretti, features Giovanni (Nanni Moretti) as the protagonist, a director who is becoming less in tune with the world around him. Giovanni is filming a movie set in 1956, the story of the secretary of the PCI section in the Roman neighbourhood of Quarticciolo who must figure out how to react to the sending of Soviet tanks to Budapest. The producer of the film is his wife Paola (Margherita Buy), who is considering leaving him, although Giovanni does not know this. Giovanni is also writing a film based on John Cheeverās āThe Swimmer,ā and at the same time, he imagines making a film that tells the forty-year story of a couple, with many Italian songs serving as background music.ā
