Troubadors of Folk, Vol. 4: Singer-Songwriters of the 1970s stretches the series' boundaries a bit, including folk-inspired rock singer/songwriters such as John Sebastian along with more purely folk artists like Loudon Wainwright. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's smash "Mr. Bojangles," Phoebe Snow's "Poetry Man," Harry Chapin's "Taxi," and Don McLean's "Vincent" are some more of the collection's rock-based highlights, while Kate McGarrigle's "Heart Like a Wheel," Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust," and Arlo Guthrie's "Hobo's Lullaby" rank among the album's '70s folk classics. Though it's not quite as consistent as some of the previous volumes in the Troubadors of Folk series, Vol. 4 does paint an interesting portrait of how rock and folk's premier singer/songwriters borrowed a few pages from each other's books in the '70s.
