Galcher's first score collects up some of his weightless ambient productions, lending a sultry tone to Josh Kline's science fiction short "Adaptation".
Galcher Lustwerk's music is as texturally and harmonically driven as it is rhythmically locked-in. What keeps us diving back in is the NYC-based producer's woozy, levitational use of jazz tonality, that he renders using synths in a way that edges him far from his contemporaries. This skill is on full display on his score for "Adaptation", a dystopian sci-fi short that imagines what might happen after the climate crisis deepens. Without beats, Galcher's wavering atmospheres assume the character of Vangelis's jazz-flecked scores; the sounds are familiar to anyone who's heard "Information" or its predecessors, but with the machine funk pushed far into the background we're left to reason with just the trace elements.
Spartan as ever, Galcher leaves us with few clues, naming tracks numerically or after stems. '3' is an early highlight, seemingly reinterpreting the horns from 'Blade Runner Blues' and eliminating every additional element entirely. 'Places' meanwhile updates tape-y textures gleaned from earlier sci-fi lore, and 'Leads' sounds like Galcher's interpretation of Jeff Mills' legendarily knotty "Metropolis" score. Recommended.
