Born in Long Island on July 15, 1956, Joe Satriani grew up in Carle Place, New York. He began playing guitar at the age of 14, heavily influenced by his idol Jimi Hendrix. He went on to study at Five Towns College of Music and began teaching guitar. One of his first students was Steve Vai, who would later be recruited by Frank Zappa and become one of the world's greatest rock guitarists. In 1978, he moved to Berkeley, California, where he began playing in various local bands while continuing to teach. Some of his students include Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Charlie Hunter, Larry LaLonde (Primus), Kevin Cadogan (Third Eye Blind) and David Bryson (Counting Crow). Little by little, Joe Satriani built up a reputation. He released a first EP in 1984 and would later join the Greg Kihn Band in 1986.

Satriani took advantage of the fame he gained in this band to finance his first album, Not of This Earth, as well as 1987's Surfing With the Alien, which was a huge success. The record, with its finely tuned rock instrumentation and Satriani's hair-raising playing, remains a classic of the genre and is remarkably popular for an entirely instrumental album.

Joe Satriani has released 16 studio albums and 5 live albums, not to mention his other projects such as the supergroup Chickenfoot with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony (ex-Van Halen) and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers). He has sold over 10 million albums worldwide.
