Continuing in its line of well-crafted introductory albums, this installment of Telarc's "Everybody's" line features the works of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. As in other volumes, this two-disc set pleasantly provides listeners with a few select, important works of the composer heard in their entirety rather than just a smattering of movements and excerpts. This gives listeners a chance to truly appreciate how movements function together in the broader piece and allow for a better understanding and grasp of Sibelius. Everybody's Sibelius draws on recordings made with conductor Yoel Levi at the helm of both the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (symphonies No. 1 and No. 5, and The Swan of Tuonela) and the Cleveland Orchestra (Symphony No. 2 and Finlandia). Both orchestras live up to their well-earned reputations and Levi's leadership is even-keeled throughout. The Cleveland Orchestra's performances offer a slightly more precise, articulate sound while Atlanta's sound is more robust and softer around the edges. Both are pleasing and satisfying in their own right and make for an interesting comparison on how the same conductor can evoke contrasting sound qualities from different orchestras. Levi's interpretations are sweeping and noble, with careful attention to details in the score, precise control of dynamics and tempo, and pleasing management of balance within the orchestra. Well-suited as an introduction to Sibelius or as an addition to a broader existing library, this album is a worthy all-around choice.
